Malaysian Media and Culture

The things that I learned in class are known more about the politics and Malaysia culture.  People in Malaysia may have different culture, different ways of doing things, different believes, but they are all united. Malaysia is a country with three major races whereas most countries have only one. Even though there are limitations, but we can tolerate and be considerate to others. I think this is the main point of our unity. We do enjoy celebrating others celebration, enjoy other races food, and enjoy dressing up as others.

We also know that our culture is our identities. We need to protect our culture from destroyed in the future. There is nobody to protect beside Malaysia people. Politeness in language will show a real identities and it is also to differentiate with other country. Malaysia is known with many ethnic which has own identities but all of the ethnic has politeness in their language.

Lastly, I would like to thanks our lecturer. Thank you so much.

Puteri Gunung Ledang

We had seen the film of Puteri Gunung Ledang in the class. The film is about the forbidden romance that blossomed between Gusti Putri, a Javanese Hindu princess, and Hang Tuah, a Malay Muslim warrior from Melaka.

Puteri Gunung Ledang

Actually, I had heard the story of Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat since I was in secondary school. When the lecturer asked us about what do we think about Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat and who of them was the hero, I had think a lot of this question.

Hang Tuah

I found that Hang Tuah represented obedience to the authority while Hang Jebat represented loyalty to his comrade. We cannot decide whether loyalty or obedience is more important. I think that this is all depends on our value system. If we already choose the thing that we believe in, we have to trust our decision.

Kampung Hakka

We had our presentation on Monday. There are two director come to our presentation. We were very nervous. The topic that we presented for our presentation is Kampung Hakka. We had gone to Kampung Hakka a few weeks ago. After we visited Kampung Hakka, we had made a documentary film. The issue that rose in the documentary film is about after surviving the rise and fall of the tin mining industry in Kampung Mantin, the villagers just became the victim of development after living at there for about hundreds years.
We were taking some pictures from Kampung Hakka.

When we first stepped into Kampung Hakka, we saw the words like this ----- The developer are trying to destroy the house of Kampung Hakka.
Kampung Hakka

When I first stepped into Kampung Hakka, I was amazed that a Chinese village complete with the temple, community hall and school existed in the village. When I looked at the building structure of their homes and their lifestyles, I was convinced that these villagers have a history to talk about. Most of the villagers are elderly as their children have left to more urban town centres.

The school

The temple

When I went there, I strongly feel that they have right to stay there. It is because I heard a lot of villagers talk about their fore father came many years ago, how their build their houses, and said they will fight to be stay at here. Some even question me, where do you want us to go? I feel sad when I heard about this.

2016 Freedom Filmfest

This is my first time for participating the Freedom Film Fest. I was very excited. From this field trip, i had know that the Freedom Film Fest since 2003 has created a vital platform for social filmmakers and human rights activists to showcase their films and advocate their causes.

In this trip, we had watch three films in the black box. I was amazed by the film which name 'Stories From My Father'. It is talked about a daughter tries to make connections between her seemingly ordinary life and her father's past as he shares with her about his experiences in detection without trial from 1968-1974, under Malaysia's Internal Security Act (ISA). He was jailed for his involvement in the Labour Party which was subsequently outlawed because of its pro-communist leanings.

This director of this film is Ashleigh Lim. I hope i can participate this activity next year.

1984 Here and Now

I have went to New Era College to watch a drama with my friends. The title of the drama is 1984, Here and Now. It is a play by well-know Malaysian political writer Khee Thuan Chye and adapted from Geogre Orwell’s novel 1984.
The ticket

The performance of actors is good although the actors have some forgetting the script. I like the ways they move their stage or wall. However, there is some things that I didn’t like it. Some of the  story does not belong to the title. I feel that the purpose of some scene is use to make the drama longer but not because of the needed of the drama.

However, from this drama, I know that there is no resolution to this play. We have to provide it. If there is any hope, it lies to us. Our act of participation will matter. It is the first step to have the positive change. Besides that, what we can do will not only be for ourselves but also for our children and our parents. We have to do what we can do now and here, or tomorrow will be lost.
